The University of Leon (ULE), and the General Foundation of ULE (GFULE), headquarters of the 10th Conference, and Cal Poly Humboldt are pleased to invite the national and international academic communities to the “X Alexander von Humboldt International and Interdisciplinary Conference: Voyages To and From Spain Throughout the Centuries” which will take place in the city of Leon, Spain, between July 3th and 7th of 2023.
The main objective of the conference is to encourage academic and interdisciplinary debate around the prominent figure of Alexander von Humboldt and the travelers to and from Spain of all times. The discussions include the Sciences: Social and Physical, as well as, the Humanities: Literature and Art.
The importance of the figure of Alexander von Humboldt in Spain is unquestionable. Beginning in Spain in 1799, with the authorization of King Charles IV, von Humboldt commences travels and studies of the Americas, research that will return to Spain and other European countries. The “X Alexander von Humboldt International and Interdisciplinary Conference: Travels To and From Spain Throughout the Centuries” invites researchers from all different continents, to reclaim and revitalize the rich inheritance of the interdisciplinary dialogue that propelled Alexander von Humboldt on his journey from Spain to the Americas.

Dra. Hilde Perez is an Associate Professor and head of the Department of Mechanical, Computer and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Leon. She received her Ph. D. from Polytechnic University of Madrid, obtaining the Outstanding Doctorate Award. She is leading a research group in the University of Leon, Smart Systems for Manufacturing. Her research fields of interest are modelling and simulation of machining processes, micromanufacturing and high performance machining.
Professor of German and Comparative Literature at the University of Bern in Switzerland. He edited or co-edited Alexander von Humboldt‘s Asie centrale (2009), Vues des Cordillères (2004) and Kosmos (2004), the Chimborazo Diary (2006), his Graphical Works (2014), Sketches (2019) and Humboldt’s Complete Writings (2019) as well as two volumes on Humboldt’s international reception: Alexander von Humboldt in World Literature (2012), Alexander von Humboldt in Cultural Criticism (2012).
PHD in Biology and Research Professor at Instituto de Historia del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) member of the Spanish and Colombian Royal Academies of History and the Mexican Academy of Sciences. He has published numerous books and articles in prestigious national and international journals and contributed to several book chapters about Alexander von Humboldt.
Dr. Frank Holl is a historian of science. In 2003 his book El mundo de Alexander von Humboldt has been awarded as one of the best edited books in Spain. In Latin America and Europe, between 1996 and 2009, Holl curated eleven large scale exhibitions on Humboldt. In 2009 his book Alexander von Humboldt - mein vielbewegtes Leben, was chosen as "historical book of the year" by the historical magazine "Damals" in Germany.
Dra. Gladys Ilarregui is Associate Professor of Colonial and Latin American Studies at the Department of Languages, Literatures and Modern Cultures of the University of Delaware. In 2018, she was awarded with the Fulbright Specialist Grant. Her insights on Von Humboldt are a reflection on the Americas' social inequality under the Latin American cultural heritage´s perspective.
